For fence manufacturers
A fence is not sold by the metre. It is sold by the bay.
The customer gives you a length. You need the number of bays, the number of posts, where the wicket lands and what that does to the price. The configurator works that out before the enquiry reaches a salesperson.
Where a fence breaks an ordinary calculator
A fence is not length multiplied by a price per metre. The run has to be divided into bays the manufacturer actually makes, the post count is one more than the bay count and changes at a corner, gates and wickets come out of the bay count and add a price of their own, and height changes not only the material but which infills are permitted at all.
A calculator that skips this gives the customer a number the salesperson then has to redo — which destroys exactly the trust that showing a price was meant to build.
What the engine works out on its own
Dividing the run into bays, the number and type of posts, where gates and wickets sit, and the parts list that follows. The customer drags the length and watches the bay count change, not just the total.
The price comes from your price list and your rules: material, finish, height, infill, hardware, delivery and installation. It is not an estimate standing next to the price list; it is the same calculation your salesperson makes.
What it does to the enquiry
Instead of "I need a fence around the house, how much is it", what arrives is a configuration: length, height, infill type, colour, gate count, price and a link to the 3D design. The salesperson verifies rather than investigates.

- The run is split into bays you can actually manufacture, not into arbitrary numbers.
- Height and infill
- At each height only the infills permitted for it are offered.
- Gates and wickets
- They come out of the bay count and add their own hardware and their own price.
- Finish and colour
- Only what you really stock is offered, surcharges for non-standard shades included.
